Homage to Duchamp
Viola Zagni
The Artwork: Homage to Duchamp was born out of a desire to reinterpret Marcel Duchamp’s famous Bottle Rack, also known as Hedgehog (Riccio). A pivotal figure of the historical avant-garde and widely considered as the father of conceptual art, Duchamp revolutionized artistic language through the concept of the ready-made, shifting focus away from technical skill and placing the idea at the very core of the artwork. In dialogue with this legacy, Homage to Duchamp presents itself as a contemporary reinterpretation that remains faithful to the original structure, crafted entirely from iron. The artwork thus maintains a direct, conscious engagement with Duchampian thought, reflecting on the relationship between artistic memory, material matter, and contemporary reinterpretation.
