The figure of Vittorio Pozzesi, president of the Consorzio del Marchio Storico – Chianti Classico from 1994 to 1997 and President of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico from 1998 to 2006, is one of those who worked the most to ensure the protection of the unique Chianti Classico territory.
In May 2001, Pozzesi presented to the Assembly of the members of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico a highly significant document, the “Carta per l’uso sostenibile del territorio del Chianti Classico”. This tool was not just a manifesto of intentions, but a concrete starting point to open a dialogue with Public Administrations. The goal was to share with municipal and provincial institutions a vision of territorial management based on principles of sustainability and environmental protection.
Pozzesi’s presentation marked a crucial moment for the Chianti Classico, as it represented an attempt to create a cross-sector collaboration between the various public bodies, ensuring that the economic development of the region could go hand in hand with the protection of its inimitable landscape. This type of approach demonstrated how the wine sector could actively promote sustainability, not only as a guardian of the winemaking tradition but also as a defender of the territory.
Pozzesi did not fail to emphasize the importance of considering the Chianti Classico as a “unicum”, an inseparable entity to be defended in all its aspects. In an emblematic statement from that period, he expressed a hope shared by many:
“We hope to be able to formulate a general landscape plan that considers the entire Chianti Classico as a ‘unicum’ to be safeguarded and protected in all its aspects.”
These words, still relevant today, remind us that the protection of such a precious territory is not only a task for past generations but a responsibility shared by future ones as well.
