The Chianti Classico territory has 11 UGA (Geographical Unit Additional).
Each UGA represents an area of the Chianti Classico territory which, for its particular geo-morphological and climatic characteristics, allows the production of wines that have peculiar organoleptic characteristics.
In the northern area of the Chianti Classico territory there is the UGA of San Casciano.
San Casciano in Val di Pesa is a municipality located in the province of Florence with an ancient history: its territory has in fact been inhabited since from the time of the Etruscans.
The territory corresponding to the UGA of San Casciano can be defined as a vast alluvial plateau, which has numerous valleys and the whose summit part is approximately 300 meters above sea level. UGA has you covered an area of 9,100 hectares and has a total of 1,560 hectares of vineyards, equal to 17.1% of the total, with 45 wineries.
Among the most important valleys in the territory of the UGA of San Casciano we can remember the Terzona torrent valley and the torrent valley Sugana which divide, respectively, the Montefiridolfi hill from that of Mercatale in Val di Pesa and the ridge of La Romola from the areas of Sant’Andrea in Percussina, Cigliano and Argiano.
In the southernmost area of the UGA the territory changes: in the area of Campoli, on the border with the UGA San Donato in Poggio and Montefioralle, in fact, the landscape becomes more mountainous.
The territory of the UGA of San Casciano, due to its particular mildness of its climate, it is also perfect for the growth of the olive tree, which is possible find in abundance in this area of Chianti Classico.
